Alina Hatfield November 2025 Student of the Month

Portrait of Alina Hatfield.Alina Hatfield, our November Student of the Month, chose to major in marketing because of the field’s unique balance of creativity and analysis. “Marketing allows you to be both equally creative and analytical, which is what I really enjoy about it,” she shared. This versatility has guided Alina’s academic journey and inspired her to explore a wide range of marketing experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Among her favorite courses is MKTG 495A: Prime Practicum with Dr. Coupland, where she gained hands-on experience working on a real-world marketing campaign for the skincare brand Vichy. As a member of the Consumer Insights team, Alina conducted primary research through focus groups and personal interviews, then helped translate those insights into a comprehensive client presentation. Another standout course for her has been MKTG 330 with Dr. Szocs, where she enjoyed learning about consumer behavior and applying that knowledge to a class food drive project.

Throughout her time at Penn State, Alina has successfully blended her marketing skills with knowledge in management and logistics. “I would love for my future job to encapsulate many aspects of business, not just marketing,” she explained. “Smeal prepares you well for a career in any area of business, no matter what your major is.”

This past summer, Alina interned at ALDI as a District Manager Intern, where she developed relationships with store managers, provided feedback on store performance, and gained valuable insight into stock management practices. One of her favorite moments was contributing to the success of a store grand opening by welcoming community members and ensuring the sales floor was organized and ready for customers. She is currently finalizing her plans for another internship this coming summer.

Alina’s leadership extends well beyond the classroom. She serves on the Board of Directors for Smeal Student Mentors, where she helps first-year students transition to college and feel welcomed within the business school. “It has been so fulfilling to help younger students and see the positive impact the organization has had,” she said. In addition, Alina has served as Secretary for Prime, Marketing Chair for the Smeal Student Council, and completed the Smeal Ethical Leadership Challenge, demonstrating her commitment to leadership and integrity within the Smeal community.

A proud State College native, Alina was born and raised just steps from campus and proudly notes that Penn State was the only school she applied to. Looking ahead, she is eager to expand her horizons as she studies abroad in Spain next semester, where she plans to take cultural courses, travel, and complete an international internship.

When asked what advice she would give to new Smeal students, Alina emphasized the importance of connection:

“All of the Marketing professors are truly amazing! Don’t be afraid to reach out and make connections. There are so many great resources available. Take advantage of your Smeal Student Mentor and apply for the Alumni Mentoring Program. There’s a great community that wants to help you, you just have to take that first step.”

Dr. Hmurovic, who nominated Alina, shared, “Alina is an exceptionally driven and thoughtful student who consistently impresses me with her commitment to leading with integrity and supporting Smeal students.”
